Every 4 years a new Parish Council is elected. Next election May 2003.

The Wards

The parish will be divided into 4 wards, for the 2003 elections:

Lower Ward - the area between Cam Pitch and the A38

Central Ward - Cam Pitch, Fairmead, Summerhayes and part of Norman Hill

Upper Ward - part of Norman Hill, Everlands and the Upthorpe, Cam Green and Ashmead areas

Woodfield Ward - the Woodfield area

Each ward will be represented by 4 Parish councillors.

Currently there are 3 Wards and 15 councillors.

Who can be a councillor ?

No formal qualifications are needed to be a Parish councillor but you must be:
  • over 21 years of age,
  • a Commonwealth citizen or Euro national, and
  • an elector of the parish.

Also, during the whole of the 12 months prior to the election you must either

    1. be a resident, or
    2. be owner or tenant of land or premises, or
    3. have your only or principal place of work

in or within 3 miles of the Parish Boundary.

Any of the following circumstances would not permit you to become a councillor:

  • holding a paid office under the Council,
  • bankruptcy,
  • conviction of an offense that results in imprisonment for three months or more
  • having been found guilty of corrupt or illegal practices

Co-opted councillors

Vacant seats are filled by co-option if

  • insufficient candidates stand at the whole council elections or,
  • no by-election has been requested (by at least 10 electors from the affected ward) to fill a mid-term vacancy.

Cam Parish Council's usual practice is to advertise any vacant seats and make a decision based on written applications from interested residents.
